Individual Therapy
Psychodynamic talk therapy leads us on a path to self discovery. We often do things we don’t want to do and for reasons difficult to understand. We repeat them over and over and can’t seem to figure out why. We have feelings, both conscious and unconscious, that affect our behavior. When we talk about them, we become more aware. That awareness then serves as the catalyst to change. Exploring ourselves to unlock what is stuck and move forward is the key to finding your inner peace.
My approach to therapy is primarily psychodynamic. I take the time to listen closely to your needs and tailor our sessions to meet you where you are, as well as explore the goals to get you to where you want to be. With psychodynamic therapy, we focus on the past and its impact on your current life and relationships. In this, it allows for a deeper level of understanding and processing to take place. We will explore unconscious thought processes and feelings that inform your thoughts and behaviors. Much of the work is exploratory, looking at emotions and behaviors that get in the way. Based on these insights, we can work through and shift problematic thought patterns while developing practical strategies to help you reach your goals. We will utilize the interactions between us to better understand patterns in your life as it informs your sense of self as well as your personal relationships. Many of your difficulties in finding or maintaining healthy relationships pertain to your past. Therapy can help you delve into past and current relationships, pinpointing ways you may be unconsciously sabotaging and disconnecting from your relationship.
I also incorporate techniques of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT. CBT involves more concrete action steps that can be helpful in implementing changes or overcoming more immediate, debilitating problems. Mindfulness-based approaches help you tune into your thoughts and feelings to promote insight into your behaviors. CBT is generally considered short-term therapy, ranging from 5-15 sessions.
